Turbo Types

Volvo Turbocharger Types Explained

Understanding the different types of forced induction used across the Volvo range helps you find the right replacement.

Single Turbo

TD04 / KP39 (2000–present)

The workhorse configuration for most Volvo turbo engines. The Mitsubishi TD04 on the five-cylinder T5 and the BorgWarner KP39 on entry-level T3/T4 models use journal bearings and internal wastegates for simple, reliable boost delivery. These are the most common and affordable Volvo turbos on the SA used market.

Variable Geometry (VGT)

GT2052V / Garrett VGT (Diesel)

Used exclusively on Volvo diesel engines (D5 and D4), variable geometry turbos use electronically actuated guide vanes to optimize boost across the entire rev range. This eliminates the compromise between low-end response and top-end power. The electronic actuator is a common failure point and is often repairable without replacing the entire turbo.

Twin-Scroll Turbo

BorgWarner Drive-E T5 (2014–present)

The modern Drive-E T5 turbo uses a divided exhaust housing (twin-scroll design) that separates exhaust pulses from cylinders 1&4 and 2&3. This prevents exhaust gas interference and delivers faster spool-up with less lag. The BorgWarner unit also features an electronic wastegate for precise boost control and improved fuel efficiency.

Roots Supercharger

Eaton/Roots T6 Twin-Charged (2015–present)

Unique to Volvo's T6 powertrain, the Roots-type supercharger provides instant boost from 2,100 RPM by mechanically compressing air via belt drive off the crankshaft. Working in tandem with a turbocharger, it eliminates turbo lag entirely. An electromagnetic clutch engages the supercharger only when needed. This is the rarest Volvo forced induction unit on the SA market.

Got Questions?

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about buying a used Volvo turbocharger in South Africa.

How much does a Volvo turbo cost in South Africa?

Used Volvo turbocharger prices in South Africa range from R3,400 for a Garrett GT2052V D5 diesel turbo to R35,000 for a T6 Roots supercharger unit. The most commonly requested turbos — the TD04 five-cylinder turbo and Garrett D5 VGT — typically fall between R3,400 and R14,000. Modern Drive-E BorgWarner twin-scroll turbos range from R8,000 to R25,000. Contact us with your specific model and engine code for an accurate quote.

What are the signs of a failing Volvo turbo?

Common signs of a failing Volvo turbo include blue or grey smoke from the exhaust (oil burning through worn seals), a high-pitched whining or grinding noise under boost, noticeable loss of power and acceleration, excessive oil consumption, and a check engine light with boost-related fault codes. On D5 diesel models, sticky VGT vanes can cause intermittent limp mode. If you notice any of these symptoms, have the turbo inspected promptly to avoid secondary engine damage.

Should I replace or recondition my Volvo turbo?

Reconditioning is often more cost-effective for common Volvo turbos like the TD04 and GT2052V. A quality recon with a new CHRA (centre rotating assembly) typically costs from R3,750 and delivers like-new performance. However, if the housing is cracked, the compressor wheel is damaged, or the VGT mechanism is seized, replacement with a quality used or new aftermarket unit is usually the better option. We can advise based on your specific situation.

Which Volvo models are turbocharged?

Nearly all modern Volvos are turbocharged. The Drive-E range (2014+) uses turbocharging across all T4, T5, T6, D3, D4, and D5 variants. The T6 adds a Roots supercharger alongside the turbo. Pre-2014 models with turbo engines include the T5 (2.5-litre five-cylinder turbo), D5 (2.4-litre diesel turbo), and T6 (3.0-litre inline-six turbo). Only base-model naturally aspirated variants (like the S40 2.0 and older 2.4i) lack forced induction.

Is the D5 turbo the same as other diesel turbos?

No, the Volvo D5 turbo (Garrett GT2052V) is specific to Volvo's 2.4-litre five-cylinder diesel engine. While Garrett supplies turbos to many manufacturers, each application has unique specifications for housing geometry, actuator calibration, and compressor mapping. Always specify your exact engine code (e.g., D5244T4, D5244T10) when ordering, as different D5 generations use different turbo specifications.

How long does a Volvo turbo last?

A well-maintained Volvo turbo typically lasts 150,000 to 250,000 km. The key to turbo longevity is regular oil changes with the correct grade (Volvo specifies specific oil grades for each engine), allowing the engine to idle briefly before shutdown after hard driving, and addressing oil leaks promptly. The TD04 and GT2052V turbos are known for excellent durability when properly maintained. Drive-E turbos are still too new for definitive longevity data, but early indications are positive.
