Drive-E 4-Cylinder
B4204T / D4204T (2014-present)
The modular Drive-E cylinder head is shared across all modern Volvo four-cylinder engines, both petrol and diesel. A single aluminium DOHC 16-valve casting with variable valve timing. This head services T4, T5, T6, D3, and D4 variants with only minor internal differences.
Five-Cylinder (Petrol)
B5254T / B5244S (2000-2016)
The legendary Volvo five-cylinder head is a DOHC 20-valve aluminium casting. The turbo variants (B5254T) are prone to cam seal leaks at high mileage. Multiple SA strippers stock these heads, making them one of the most readily available Volvo parts in the country.
Five-Cylinder (Diesel)
D5244T (2001-2015)
The D5 diesel cylinder head is the most commonly requested Volvo head in SA due to warping from overheating. This aluminium DOHC casting is susceptible to thermal stress, particularly if the cooling system has been neglected. Verified SA pricing starts at R9,000 used.
Inline-6 Turbo
B6304T (2007-2014)

Can a warped cylinder head be repaired?

The B5254T 2.5-litre five-cylinder turbo engine is known for cam seal leaks at high mileage. The camshaft seals at the rear of the head deteriorate over time, allowing oil to leak externally. While this doesn't require head replacement (just new seals), it's a common reason why heads are removed and sometimes damaged during the process. If buying a used B5254T head, check that the cam seal surfaces are undamaged.
What's included with a used cylinder head?
Used cylinder heads are available in two configurations: bare (casting with valves and springs only) and complete (with camshafts, lifters, VVT gear, and cam cover). Always specify which you need when enquiring. A bare head is cheaper but requires you to transfer or source camshafts and ancillaries separately. A complete head is more expensive but ready to bolt on with a new head gasket.
How do I know if my cylinder head is cracked?
Symptoms of a cracked Volvo cylinder head include: white smoke from the exhaust (coolant burning), milky residue in the oil (coolant mixing with oil), overheating with no obvious coolant leak, bubbles in the coolant expansion tank, and unexplained coolant loss. A machine shop can confirm with a pressure test or dye penetrant test. The D5 diesel head is particularly prone to cracking between valve seats after overheating episodes.
